// Ever since I started to freely block people on Twitter life has never been any better
Ok that might be a slight exaggeration because I'd like to believe that what I see on Twitter.com doesn't actually affect my life that much. Anyway. I used to mute people and phrases pretty freely. New trend I got tired of seeing? Muted. Twitter suddenly pushing content from a fandom that I'm not interested in? Muted. Keep seeing posts from a certain account that I just don't really care about or lowkey finds annoying? Muted. For me the mute button means "you didn't do anything wrong, I just want to curate my feed and I'd rather not see your posts". Whereas the block button is for accounts that I absolutely do not want to interact with, nor do I want them to see anything I have to say. (If only the block button still works like this...)
When it comes to accounts spewing bigotry and stuff that falls under your typical "basic DNI criteria" it's an instant block; one-strike and you're out. (I have some thoughts on people putting "basic DNI" in their bio but that's a topic of discussion for another time.) However, recently I've started to block more freely and I think I like it better this way :P Oh this account said something that I didn't like but is ultimately harmless? Blocked. This person has a different headcanon about a character I like and is annoying about it? Blocked. It's this mindset of "I don't really lose anything from not seeing this person's opinion ever again + there's an extremely small chance that we will ever interact anyway" that feels freeing, I think. I'm always impressed that some people manage to have like 1000+ blocked accounts, but I get it now. It's Twitter. Every hit tweet that blows up, especially from someone that you don't follow, there's bound to be loads of comments or quote retweets with opinions you don't like. Sure, I could just ignore these, but if I get a really bad vibe I don't mind spending an extra 5 seconds clicking on their account and hitting the block button for a little peace of mind. So, yeah. The Mute button is for "you didn't do anything wrong I just don't want to see your tweets" and the Block button is for "you are a terrible human being" or "I just don't like you and I would prefer to never see what you have to say ever again". Hmm maybe that tweet about Twitter needing a notes feature so we can remember why we blocked someone has a point...
Twitter really needs to let you add notes on why you blocked certain accounts cause i have to guess whether this person's a super predator or just doesnt like onions —@venz228, 3:03 PM ยท Nov 25, 2025
